Automation Technician

Under minimum supervision, participates in the manufacturing, installation, and support of automated equipment, jigs, fixtures, and machinery, as part of the Manufacturing Engineering Department’s Automation Team. Fabricates and assembles components with the use of blueprints and wiring and/or pneumatic controls diagrams, and ensures all work meets national and state safety requirements and guidelines.


What You’ll Do:

  • Fabricates, assembles, and integrates automated equipment, jigs, fixtures, and other machinery to help improve the internal customers’ processes. Assists in sourcing and creates requisition orders for parts and components for said equipment, jigs, fixtures.
  • Develops operating, as well as preventative maintenance and troubleshooting instructions for automated equipment.
  • Installs automated equipment made in house or by third parties in cooperation with maintenance and production personnel and supports the maintenance and production personnel with integrating said equipment into the manufacturing processes it’s been designed to serve. Trains maintenance and production personnel on using, maintaining, and troubleshooting said equipment, assists maintenance personnel in troubleshooting said equipment as needed.
  • Assists in the specification and design process of automated equipment, as part of the Automation Team.
  • Assists in the setup and programming of PLCs, sensors, relays, variable frequency and servo drives, and other industrial controllers and devices.
  • Works as part of project teams that may include members from other departments within the organization and/or from third party organizations.
  • Maintains inventory of parts, tools, and shop supplies and issues requisitions for purchases as needed.
  • Uses mechanic and electrician hand tools and hand-held power-tools, such as band saw, belt sander, pedestal grinder, for the purpose of fabricating and integrating automated equipment, jigs, fixtures, and other machinery, as needed.
  • Generates technical documentation (sketches, electrical or pneumatic diagrams, operation and/or maintenance instructions, etc.), and maintains training records for automated equipment, jigs, fixtures and machinery.
  • Works in a team-based environment towards developing optimal processes of building our products.
  • Ensures that work areas are kept clean and organized at all times, and that all tools and supplies are kept in good working order and are in their proper location.
  • Follows company policies and practices as outlined in the Employee Handbook and/or applicable employment agreement. Follows safety guidelines and procedures in accordance to the job.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.


What You’ll Need:

  • AS in Mechanical or Industrial/Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent, Electrical Engineering or equivalent, from an accredited university, with minimum two years relevant experience to the field of industrial automation, required.
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, wiring and pneumatic diagrams.
  • Must have the ability to diagnose equipment mechanical and electrical problems, and to apply troubleshooting procedures.
  • Must have the ability to use precision inspection tools such as calipers, micrometers and gauges is desired.
  • Must be dependable and self-motivated.
  • Must be able to operate in a fast-paced organization, handle multiple projects simultaneously, and train others in proper work methods.


Bonus Points For:

  • Preferred: BS in Mechanical or Industrial/Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent, Electrical Engineering or equivalent, from an accredited university.
  • Experience setting up, programming, and/or troubleshooting industrial control devices (e.g. PLCs, variable frequency drives, servos, stepper motors, sensors, relays, etc.) is preferred.
  • Experience working with pneumatic controls and actuators is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office is desired.
  • Ability to operate machine tools, such as milling machines, band saw, pedestal and/or table-top grinder a plus.
